CHARACTER
Name: Red
Series: Pokémon Special (also known as Pokémon Adventure)
Age: At least about fourteen, aged up to eighteen
Canon Point: After the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc, two years after becoming the ninth Pokémon League Champion. He just helped save the Gym Leaders and his friends and, you know, maybe the world a little bit. Also after finding out that one of his little protege buddies is a girl.
History: Bulbapedia's history section for him is TL;DR-worthy thorough
Powers/Weapons: Red himself doesn't have any special powers or martial training--apart from being an exceptionally gifted Pokemon battler--but he does come equipped with six monster buddies ready and raring to rumble. [Click names for pictures of each Pokémon.]

Pika: (Pikachu, male) The rudest little electric rat one could ever hope to meet. Despite a rough start, Pika has become one of Red's most trusted Pokemon, one of his strongest, and definitely his cleverest. Pika's powers include the generation of electricity (e.g. Thunderbolt), sacrificing energy to create a ghostly clone of himself (Substitution), and using that sacrificed energy as a vehicle for water transportation (Surf).

Saur: (Venusaur, male) Red's solid and stolid power-fighter. Saur can attack with whirling blade-like leaves or fully prehensile vines from its back (Razor Leaf, Vine Whip), release highly reactive pollen and perfumes that can lull or poison (Sleep Powder, Poison Powder), or absorb sunlight to fire a powerful energy beam (Solarbeam).

Poli: (Poliwrath, male) Red's first Pokemon, and his most loyal. Poli is quick and versatile, able to fight as well in the drink as on land and to surprise his opponents with either water-based attacks (Water Gun, Ice Beam) or physical ones (Seismic Toss, Double Slap).

Vee: (Espeon, male) Vee was once a test subject for Team Rocket, but Red won him over--and then some, as his evolution to Espeon reveals. He has powerful psychic attacks (Psychic) and can revitalize himself with solar energy (Morning Sun).

Gyara: Originally owned by Gym Leader Misty, but also stolen and experimented on by Team Rocket. Red uses him for water transport. Gyara can blast an opponent away with water (Hydro Pump), an energy beam (Hyper Beam), or mysterious flames (Dragonbreath); or just chomp down with those unbelievable jaws (Bite).

Aero: (Aerodactyl, male) A rock-hard, pterodactyl-like creature strong enough to fly carrying Red's weight. Aero can slam an opponent from the sky (Fly), attack with his claws (Dragon Claw), shoot an energy beam (Hyper Beam), or emit a high-pitched noise to disorient his opponents (Supersonic).

Suitability: N/A

Personality: The big dreams of small-town kids: that's what Champions are made of.

Red grew up in a world vivid with danger, wonder, and adventure, in which every tree or stone could hide a creature bristling with power. He set out, at the tender age of eleven, to master every one of those creatures and become one of the best Pokémon trainers Kanto has ever seen. No small ambition for anyone of any age, but he's made it a reality through his courage, perseverance, quick thinking, some luck, and the strength of heart that has won him the loyalty of Pokémon and other trainers alike.

Like many hero-types, Red's got a near-endless stock of courage that can tip pretty easily into cocky territory, though he's not as reckless as he used to be. He's learned that he has limits, and to mind them. Instead of childish bravado, his bravery stems from a calm confidence in his and his Pokémon's skills--a confidence backed by experience.

He's also got a tenacity that rivals mountains. If he sets his mind to do something, he does it. He wants to be a great Trainer--he wins the Pokémon League. He swears he'll take down Team Rocket--he chases them down to their hideout and fights his way to the top.

That courage and resolve combined with a serious competitive streak keep him from ever letting a battle go by undecided. Luckily, he's an innovative, brilliant tactician who takes in all aspects of a situation--strengths, weaknesses, the environment, outside information--and comes up with a plan that shocks even the most experienced Gym Leaders. This has earned him, in Professor Oak's esteem, the title of "Fighter"--the Trainer you'd most want on your side in a battle.

But ultimately, being the best involves a lot more than winning cockfights. It has everything to do with being good.

Red's got a heart of gold and he wears it on his sleeve, and there's no cause too small for him to just up and get his hero act on. He genuinely enjoys helping people and pushing them on to help other people (or Pokémon), even complete strangers or former enemies. He's also good at reading Pokémon body language; though he can't read Pokémon's minds, he can readily understand most anything they try to convey to him, and even in the first days of his journey he recognized that a Kangaskhan was trying to protect its poisoned baby in time to stop his rival from hurting it.

He tends to be pretty easygoing in interpersonal relations and gets along with people of all ages. His face is an open book and changes rapidly with every switch in his emotions.

His good-heartedness may lead him to be a little too trusting--more sinister minds have snared him on multiple occasions--and it seems his keen perception does not extend beyond Pokémon. It took him two years to notice that one of his fellow Trainers was a girl, and he still has yet to acknowledge that both she and his friend Misty may fancy his gullible butt.

Also, though his recklessness has subsided since his early days, he may still be a little cocksure. While he has every reason to be confident, he's definitely not infallible and it's honestly not hard to outsmart him.

third person:

Red stared at the crowd and the crowd stared back.

The last thing he remembered was biking down the side of Mt. Silver ahead of Gold. It wasn't a race, not exactly, but the kid looked up to him and Red couldn't resist showing off just a little. Maybe that shortcut down the vertical slope was just a little bit reckless, even if cut off a whole loop of the path, but Red had done it once and besides, Saur could catch him, so--

And then he was here, flat on his back on cool stone with a sore butt and no memory of landing.

The first thing he'd done had been to check his belt--all six Pokéballs were there, and he relaxed as Pika shook his ball with a headbutt. Only then did he sit up, rubbing his tailbone and groaning. "Okay, Gold, remind me not to try that again--"

And that's when he'd noticed the dais, the fallen pillars, the strange people with their foreign clothes and the weird animals on leashes--hadn't these guys ever heard of Pokéballs? Then beyond them he noticed the buildings, and his eyes widened at the golden adornments resting on some of the more lavish buildings. It took a few moments of blinking, but eventually it sunk in that he was not where he'd thought he was, and none of these people looked anything like Gold.

After a moment, he held his palms outward, grinning nervously. "Uh. Hey guys, what's the occasion?"

[When the feed comes on, half of it shows ceiling--looking kind of far away--and the other half is the blurry shadow that usually comes from someone's finger covering the lens. The shadow lifts, but that half of the screen remains blurry, as if wet.

Something furry, chubby-cheeked, and yellow peers down at the camera from WAY too close.]

Pika?

[There's more of the shadow again as the creature paws at the phone. Other noises can be heard in the background--a low, earthy grumble; splashes of water; and one human voice.]

Now where did I put that--Pika!

Pi-pikachu!

[The view spins dizzyingly around the room, showing almost nightmarish glimpses of wide jaws, huge eyes, giant pink flowers, and then it settles on the face of a young man with an easy, though somewhat bemused smile.]

All right, looks like you got this thing to work, Pika.

Pi!

So this is just a pocket version of the phones in the Pokemon Centers, right? And I can talk to anybody? Hey, everyone!

[He waves at the phone, and then the yellow thing--it looks kind of like a rabbit, but more angular in some places and with a lightning bolt of a tail--hops onto his shoulder to examine the device. Red scratches his nose]

Well, I don't exactly know how I got here, but I'm Red, and this is Pika. Everyone else say hi, too!

[He turns the phone away from himself and shows--well, an assortment of monsters, really, some peering in from the window, all of varying colors and sizes, and all of whom, bizarrely, seem quite happy to meet the viewer. They release a friendly chorus of animal noise, abruptly cut off when the yellow one--Pika--grabs the phone again and leaps back to the floor.]

Hey--!

[But Pika presses just the right button and the transmission ends.]
